I’ve enjoyed being back home in the California sunshine. While tomorrow is the official last day of Summer, there are still many warm sunny days to enjoy in the seasons to come. On average California experiences 30 days of rainfall. Each year, during February there is at least one week when the temperature reaches the upper 70s to mid 80s. While in other parts of the country hibernate or freeze over, things here continue to grow, blossom and bloom.
We experience seasons here in California, just more subtle. That doesn’t mean that things don’t get cold. I’ve felt the weather change already, cool mornings with that sharp chill only to turn into warm sunny afternoons. I’ve seen traces of the season as I’ve driven through campus , passing by neatly piled mounds of orange and brown leaves. Bowidin Avenue reminded me of my one Autumn in New England. Mounds of autumn leaves like that are a rare site in California. Part of me wanted to run out and jump into them. But the fact that I wasn’t driving checked my child-like impulse.
When I woke up this morning and heard my mom playing this song, I thought about all Springs and Summers of my childhood. I didn’t feel like it was the end of Summer. Instead, in my own seasons of life, I’m experiencing my own Spring. So many spiritual and emotional elements in my life have begun reawaken. They had been lying dormant for so long. You really enjoy Spring after a long hard winter. I sat back listening enjoying this celebration of nature and life and appreciated all the light that shines on me and through the people people I love. Things weren’t so bad and I knew I wanted to take a moment and enjoy the sunshine.

I remembered hearing that song as a kid as well.Makes me want to go some where on Savannah( Georgia)Beach and frolick on it.I wondered who sung that song?
The scene of an Egyptian Beach in the clip is fitting. I just see myself feeling relaxed, clearing my head of all of life’s stresses and just being carefree . The sunset, the ocean, I just feel the peace in it.
Mary J. Blige made a remake of this song, but for some odd reason, I didn’t feel the beauty in it. I also liked Will Smith’s(different) version of sunshine. It may not have reminded me of going on a beach, but It reminded me of going to a family reunion on a hot,but civil summer day in South Carolina: The barbecues in my late great-grands backyard, goofing off/learning about your kin folks, and the music still fresh in my memory.

I made some corrections and noted that it was on Roy Ayer’s 1976 Ubiquity album. That pic was during Nile River Cruise. I was able to sit on the deck and enjoy the sunshine. Funny thing is, in Egypt, not too many people enjoy frolicking and getting brown in the sunshine. But that’s a whole different story.
I don’t know the location of the youtube clip because somebody else put that together. I miss California beaches, and I’m hoping to take some time to visit one soon. Even more so I miss those BBQs and kinfolks. We had a nice family reunion just before I left for Kuwait and Egypt. Nice reminder to never forget where I came from.

Thanks a bunch for the info. I didn’t know that he did that piece. For some strange reason, everytime that song came up. Rolls Royce would come to mind.I find it to be a soothing “nerve” music. A piece that gives me a piece of mind.
I agree. There is no place quite like the one we’re from.I just had a friend of mine who recently went to Madagascar. Although she likes her work(she with the Job Corps), she said that she has been homesick for the longest( she’s been there for 8 months) and is missing what we have discussed in our posts.
I will never forget where I came from. I just cannot do that.I can go to live in another country, but unless those memories were negative, I just do not see myself living nowhere else on a permanent basis, except my hometown.
